“Art of War”-We The Kings and The Hunger Games (Songs and Sundays #1)

My fellow music- and book-loving friend introduced me to We The Kings this past summer, but I recently started listening to a lot of their songs this past week. She sent me the link to “Art of War” by We The Kings last weekend and I have been listening to it ever since. It reminds me a lot of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, despite not being affiliated with the books or movies in the slightest.

Lyrics:

“I was just a kid then skipping stones
Innocent and so alone
In a sense we were all alone
You could take my heart and you could take my home
But you’ll never ever break my soul
No you’ll never ever break my soul”

I feel like the first verse is the transition of Katniss into the Hunger Games. She was fairly normal before, but when she was taken away from her home and brought into the games, everything changed.

“But you know me
I wanna go back but I can’t back down
And you know me too well
‘Cause”

Katniss doesn’t want to be in the games, despite volunteering for her sister, and if she can, she would go back. However, is already in too far and going back is impossible.

“I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
You and I fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, up against the wall yeah
I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
Live and die fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall”

Personally, the chorus is self-explanatory. Katniss refuses to give up until the Hunger Games are ended. She is a soldier and one that won’t stop until a change was made.

“We were just two kids thrown into the flames
We would never ever be the same
We would never ever be the same
We were just a spark that lit the change
They could never ever bring the rain
They could never ever bring the rain”

The flames mentioned in this verse relate to the Hunger Games to me and the two kids are Katniss and Peeta. After the games, life can’t just go back to normal for them, everything will never be the same.

“But you know me
I wanna go back but I can’t back down and
You know me too well
‘Cause

I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
You and I fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, up against the wall yeah
I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
Live and die fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall

Follow me into the dark and I will lead you to the light
Formless, soundless, fearless, hearts keep holding on all through the night

I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
You and I fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, up against the wall yeah
I’m a soldier, ’til it’s over
Live and die fighting for the art of war
I’m a soldier, I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall
I will never fall

Follow me into the dark and I will lead you to the light
Formless, soundless, fearless, hearts keep holding on all through the night”

The rest of the song repeats the same ideas that I believe relate to The Hunger Games and Katniss specifically.

“Art of War” speaks of a soldier that won’t go back to the way he was before, even though he was wrenched from that life unwillingly. It’s not a happy song, but more of an anthem. I definitely recommend this song and for you to check out We The Kings!
