“Long Live”-Taylor Swift and The Golden Trio (Songs and Sundays #4)

I’ve always loved Taylor Swift, not so much her new music, but more her country songs. “Long Live” isn’t one of my favorite songs, but I definitely like it a lot. I realized last night before I fell asleep that it is similar to Harry, Ron, and Hermione after the Battle of Hogwarts. Please don’t continue reading if you haven’t read the last Harry Potter book or seen the movie.

Lyrics:

“I said remember this moment in the back of my mind
The time we stood with our shaking hands
The crowds in stands went wild
We were the Kings and the Queens
And they read off our names
The night you danced like you knew our lives
Would never be the same
You held your head like a hero
On a history book page
It was the end of a decade
But the start of an age”

This is similar to how, after the Battle of Hogwarts, the three of them will be famous. It’s the end of this time during their lives of complete fear and they’re falling into a new time, a calmer time.

“Long live the walls we crashed through
How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
I was screaming long live all the magic we made
And bring on all the pretenders
One day, we will be remembered”

They would most certainly be remembered because they defeated Voldemort. They did everything they could to defeat him and there was no way they wouldn’t be remembered. The pretenders could be seen as the people who didn’t take a side in the fight against Voldemort or were cowardly enough to hide.

“I said remember this feeling
I pass the pictures around
Of all the years that we stood there
On the side-lines wishing for right now
We are the Kings and the Queens
You traded your baseball cap for a crown
When they gave us our trophies
And we held them up for our town
And the cynics were outraged
Screaming, “This is absurd!”
Cause for a moment a band of thieves
In ripped up jeans got to rule the world”

I see them passing the pictures around as them sharing memories of their years at Hogwarts with new friends or their children. They were the “kings and the queens” for a while because they led to the destruction of Voldemort. The cynics are likely the people who weren’t necessarily Death Eaters, but didn’t support them (i.e. Umbridge or some of the Slytherin students). Harry, Ron, and Hermione were children, but they had done much more than many adults. In a way, they did rule the world for a while.

“Long live the walls we crashed through
How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
I was screaming long live all the magic we made
And bring on all the pretenders
I’m not afraid
Long live all the mountains we moved
I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you
I was screaming long live that look on your face
And bring on all the pretenders
One day, we will be remembered”

They moved mountains in the way that they changed everything about the world they lived in. While Harry did fight a dragon at one point, I believe this line is more similar to how Harry enjoyed how much time he got to spend with Ron and Hermione and how close they grew to each other.

“Hold on to spinning around
Confetti falls to the ground
May these memories break our fall

Will you take a moment, promise me this
That you’ll stand by me forever
But if God forbid fate should step in
And force us into a goodbye
If you have children some day
When they point to the pictures
Please tell them my name
Tell them how the crowds went wild
Tell them how I hope they shine”

This part seems to me like Harry is asking that Hermione and Ron never stop being friends with him. However, if something does come between them, that they never forget each other and everything that happened. It’s Harry (or Taylor) hoping that their friends don’t stop thinking about them and even talk about them to their kids. It’s the most bittersweet part of the song, reminding the listener that the war’s over, but the memories will last forever.

“Long live the walls we crashed through
I had the time of my life, with you
Long, long live the walls we crashed through
How the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
And I was screaming long live all the magic we made
And bring on all the pretenders
I’m not afraid
Singing, long live all the mountains we moved
I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you
And long, long live the look on your face
And bring on all the pretenders
One day, we will be remembered”

This is just the repeat of the chorus, reiterating the ideas I expressed before.

This song is about friends who had this big experience together, but have to continue their lives afterward. It’s the hope of someone that they’ll stay friends and that the memories will live on. It’s a really nice song if you’re looking for something not completely about love or romance, but about friendship.
