Messenger Review

Messenger by Lois Lowry

Rating: **** Suggested Age: 10

Summary: “Matty has lived in Village and flourished under the guidance of Seer, a blind man known for his special sight. Village once welcomed newcomers, but something sinister has seeped into Village and the people have voted to close it to outsiders. Matty has been invaluable as a messenger. Now he must risk everything to make one last journey through the treacherous forest with his only weapon, a power he unexpectedly discovers within himself.” (Summary found on Goodreads).

I gave Messenger the same rating I gave to Gathering Blue because it still had the “boring” characters. It was a tad bit more interesting because even though the previous characters were there, there were new characters and a few characters from the first book. The violence is higher than the first two and a main character dies. The death of the main character was very sad and at first you aren’t sure if they are dead. This is yet another book that kids can learn about the pros and cons of sacrifice. It is a nice addition to the series, but I wish it was more compelling. Lois Lowry is a great writer and I hope to read more of her books. I recommend this book to those who enjoyed the first two books and are curious to see what happens next.
