The Mortal Instruments Series Review

The Mortal Instruments Series (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire) by Cassandra Clare

Rating: ***** Suggested Age: 12 to 14

While I read this series very spread apart with a little more than a year between when I read the first book and when I read the last book, I absolutely loved it. Cassandra Clare writes very well and I enjoyed her use of third person instead of the usual first person with choppy sentences. She narrates in third person through the perspective of almost every character, even the bad ones, letting the reader know what is happening to everyone. If she didn’t, it would be very confusing and the reader wouldn’t know what was going on in the other characters’ lives (as opposed to just the main character’s). I loved the character and plot development through the whole six-book series. At points it was hard to keep up with because there are a lot of characters and a lot going on, but I got through it all. Clare created a unique fantasy series nothing like anything else I have ever read and I loved (almost) every second of it. The only parts I didn’t like were when trouble was coming for my favorite characters. Keep in mind, there is some violence and romance. Plus, younger readers wouldn’t understand it because of the complex plot and high vocabulary. Like the Harry Potter series, many of the books are extremely long and vary in length. The final book is about 700 pages, but I didn’t have a problem with that, I love thick books. I highly recommend this book series to any fantasy fan.

The six books are City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire.
